Secodev on the Ground: A Look at the Inclusion Project in Goa

June 2024 marked the beginning of the pilot phase of an innovative project aimed at promoting the integration of people with disabilities into the workforce, in Goa, India. This project addresses an urgent need: individuals facing mental health issues and intellectual disabilities experience significant stigma that hinders their inclusion in society. The lack of specialised services, the absence of tailored educational resources, and a limited understanding of neurodiversity exacerbate these challenges, while economic constraints further reduce their opportunities for integration and employment.

In light of this reality, the program is fully aligned with a social and professional inclusion dynamic, in line with national and international commitments regarding workplace accessibility. It relies on an inclusive and progressive approach, offering each participant a personalised and structured support pathway, designed by a multidisciplinary team of professionals at our local partner, recognised for its expertise.

Through customised training, tailored to each individual’s interests and abilities, project participants not only develop the technical and interpersonal skills necessary for sustainable employment but also benefit from personalised support in their long-term job search.

During our field visit, we had the opportunity to meet the participants, as well as their families, who shared their satisfaction and the first tangible changes they had observed. The opportunity to gain initial work experience and earn their first income has brought immense joy and deep pride to most of them: these individuals feel fully capable and valued.

The project has started on solid foundations, and the prospects for growth are promising and transformative. We are aware that the challenges and obstacles related to accessibility to employment for people with disabilities remain numerous, but we are all committed to overcoming them so that no one is left behind.

Once again, we thank our financial partners for their support in realising programs that are dear to our hearts.
